The Challenge: Create a lasting impression and attract potential training clients Challenge accepted! To best reflect the energetic nature of the trainers at NBworkout, we designed this bold, dynamic business card. When it comes to creating an effective print design, it’s about more than how it looks on the screen.  Paper and finishes are equally important when it comes to crafting quality, thought-out designs. We felt the cards should be physically strong while remaining flexible so that they would not come across as stiff. To achieve this balance between tough and bending we used a wicked 32 pt matt laminated paper. The green colour edging undeniably adds to the vibrancy of the cards as well. The fluid blue to green gradient, bright watermarked logo and perfectly matching green sides help to create the striking effect. Confident and instantly eye-catching, these business cards are exactly the sleek calling card the client was after. Another happy client and some very happy designers too. Win win!

Maggie, a Nigerian dwarf goat at Oakland Zoo, recently had her hooves dipped in paint in the name of art and a good cause. The zoo will be auctioning off original abstract paintings done by their animals at their Animal Art Show in a clever effort to raise money for conservation partners. Last year, Oakland Zoo auctioned off twelve paintings and raised an impressive sum of nearly $10,000. All paintings sessions were directed by gentle zoo keepers using only positive reinforcement (treats!) and none of the animals were forced to participate. Thirty-two of the works will be auctioned on eBay starting today until September 20th.

Our latest portfolio piece came about when Niskamoon Corporation looked to our team to design their 10th anniversary Annual Report for 2014-2015. We designed the piece to reflect the essence of Niskamoon Corporation and its values; featuring local photographers’ work of Cree traditions and native landscapes.

The 8″x10″ report showcases a year of success for the corporation, all the while honouring a decade of dedication to preserving Cree traditions while encouraging educational and cultural growth. We also designed a 4″x7″ trifold report overview brochure to match and offset printed 850 copies of the report in less than a month.

It’s campaign season and the Liberal Party recently unveiled its new tour bus.

While we dig the overall design and messaging, if you look closely, you’ll notice that something is not quite right.

This is how the text was meant to display:

In the bus wrapping, the font for “CHANGE” has been replaced with MyriadPro. This is the default font Adobe uses when a file contains a non-installed font. The replacement font gives the impression of odd kerning (those gaps between the letters). The best way to avoid this mistake is to convert text to outlines (shapes rather than letters) in the final artwork, which only takes two clicks.

It’s time for real change…real change of your designer.

Bus-ted.

Woot woot…We’re super excited to share that we’ve won gold at the 2015 Communicator Awards for Excellence in Marketing and Communication.

Our team hit the town for some down time and bonding tonight at Pang Pang Karaoke! We enthusiastically sang our hearts out and discovered that we should probably stick to design.

I know we’ve been a little quiet on the blog front the past few months. I swear it’s because we’ve been hard at work on client projects and developing a new website for Design Is Yummy (launch expected next month!). To prove we’re still alive and kicking creatively, here are some pics from our team dinner last night at La Petite Mangue toasting the new menu designs we created for the Montreal restaurant.

Jens-Lennartsson-Photography-Mail-Promo-8

Scandinavian photographer Jen Lennartsson created 400 action figures of himself which he sent out in custom branded packaging along with his portfolio to targeted recipients in Scandinavia and the World. On the boxes Lennartsson included a list of skills and contact information. The project began in June 2012 and the first figures were sent out in October 2013.

And we thought our holiday card assembly was labour intensive!

Kontor has changed the game with this clever direct mailing. Design agency OgilvyAction Düsseldorf / OgilvyOne Frankfurt skipped disposable promo CDs and sent out attention-grabbing vinyl presses of DJ Boris Dlugosch’s single. Using a smartphone, the piece transforms into a turntable by allowing access to a digital copy with seamless graphics (complete with needle)!

iOS 7, the new version of Apple’s mobile operating system, has arrived at last.

Designed by Apple’s industrial designer, Sir Jony Ive’s, the new “flat design” is a huge change from the look of the operating system Apple has stayed true to for the past 6 years.

So what’s changed?

  • iOS 7 has a new font (the look is skinny & clean)
  • Service coverage is now indicated with dots (vs. the previous bars)
  • The lock screen is different (for the first time in iOS’s history)
  • App icons are now flatter (but not quite flat)
  • The notifications panel isn’t has a flat look to it too (surprised?)
  • The keyboard is white(r) with an opacity level (lets you see what’s behind it)

As with all things apple, this will undoubtedly have a big impact of design trends in print, web and, of course, user interface design.
