Moleskine recently launched a new set of tools simplifying the transfer of files across digital platforms. Say goodbye to having to always scan your sketchbooks to digitize your work. The new Moleskine Smart Writing Set does all the work for you (except your drawings, of course). The set consists of a book and pen that work simultaneously to transfer your work. Each page of the ‘Paper Tablet’ is concealed with NCode™ technology, which enables the pen to digitize your sketches in real-time. The ‘Pen+’ contains a hidden camera within its body, allowing it to read everything the user writes or draws. Check out how it works!

A P.S.A to all the print lovers out there – if you haven’t heard of the new documentary Graphic Means, prepare to get excited. Graphic Means is a documentary that explores the technological advancements in graphic design, specifically typesetting, over the past 30 years. The desktop computer revolutionized and shaped the way our industry interacts with type and print. To learn a little more about the documentary, visit the official Graphic Means website. You can also pre-order the film here.

iOS 7, the new version of Apple’s mobile operating system, has arrived at last.

Designed by Apple’s industrial designer, Sir Jony Ive’s, the new “flat design” is a huge change from the look of the operating system Apple has stayed true to for the past 6 years.

So what’s changed?

  • iOS 7 has a new font (the look is skinny & clean)
  • Service coverage is now indicated with dots (vs. the previous bars)
  • The lock screen is different (for the first time in iOS’s history)
  • App icons are now flatter (but not quite flat)
  • The notifications panel isn’t has a flat look to it too (surprised?)
  • The keyboard is white(r) with an opacity level (lets you see what’s behind it)

As with all things apple, this will undoubtedly have a big impact of design trends in print, web and, of course, user interface design.

Despite the prevalence of mobile devices, I still hope that printed materials will always hold a vital place in our society. A German company called Printechnologics has a vision of reinventing the printed page though Touchcode that may just ensure the staying power of print.

An intro to Touchcode:

What’s special about the Touchcode process is the ink used. The “reflective” ink stores information in a print that would mimic a complex multi-touch gesture to a touchscreen and would be available to print on ordinary printers. This opens up all kinds of possibilities concerning mobile computing far more reaching than RFID tags or QR codes.

Touchcode has been recognized with Wall Street Journal’s prestigious Technology Innovation Award and as as Best Technology Innovation in Mobile during a recent Silicon Valley Conference.

Inkling, a new product by Wacom is pen tool that turns a simple sketch into a clean vector illustration. It even registers your pressure and allows you to create drawings on multiple layers.

This one is a game changer!

When the magic mouse came out, I’ll have to admit I wasn’t that taken by it. Apple’s new Magic Trackpad is an entirely different story. It’s the same as the trackpad on the MacBook Pro – just bigger. Using finger gestures you can scroll, swipe, pinch, and rotate. The entire surface is a clickable button. iLike!
