Design Is Yummy proudly presents the two newest additions to our growing Award collection! We recently took home two bronze awards (and these fine looking trophies) from the Creativity International Awards; one for our season graphics campaign for The Segal Centre for Performing Arts (You may recognize Prom Queen or some of the others- they’ve been all around town!), and another for our design and printing of Niskamoon Corporation’s 2015-2016 Annual Report.

This would be the second consecutive year our work for Niskamoon Corporation’s annual reports have gained international recognition. Last year, the 2014-2015 Niskamoon Corporation Annual Report received a Silver Davey Award. We would like to thank the judges from the Creativity International Awards for acknowledging our hard work. It gets us pumped to create even more award-winning pieces for our awesome clients.

Ever wish you had an app similar to Shazam but for fonts? Fellow colleagues and friends, our designer dreams have come true! For her graduating project, designer Fiona O’Leary from the Royal College of Art developed Spector, a small and practical tool that can possibly identify any font and color seen in the real world.

The tool is described as easy to use. By pressing the button on top after you’ve placed the tool over a printed surface with your inquired typeface, a photograph is taken and an algorithm runs to identify the typeface, size, kerning/leading, along with the CMYK or RGB values.

This paper tribute to the Catalan city of Barcelona is super inspiring (not to mention the perfect colour!). Using different shades of pink, the tiny intricate details of these architectural landmarks are artfully crafted in paper by French artists Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmerman in their studio of Zim & Zou for Freizenett’s (a sparkling wine) campaign. The dynamic duo at Zim & Zou team specializes in building installations using tangible materials such as paper, wood, thread, and more. Check out more of their work here.

A P.S.A to all the print lovers out there – if you haven’t heard of the new documentary Graphic Means, prepare to get excited. Graphic Means is a documentary that explores the technological advancements in graphic design, specifically typesetting, over the past 30 years. The desktop computer revolutionized and shaped the way our industry interacts with type and print. To learn a little more about the documentary, visit the official Graphic Means website. You can also pre-order the film here.

As a company founded by a female entrepreneur, we were thrilled to partner up with Artistri Sud– a non-profit organization based in Montreal with a strong focus on empowering women artisans in developing countries. With the collaboration of local communities, Artistri Sud helps women access global markets to sell their handcrafted goods and create a sustainable income to better themselves and the people surrounding them. In order to raise funds, Artistri Sud organized the upcoming event “Tales of Triumph” where inspiring women share their stories of empowerment and success. For the year of 2016, Design is Yummy was honoured to donate our time to create this powerful typographic invitation and web graphics with the hopes of raising attention and awareness to such wonderful cause.

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, we thought we would start early on the whole “hearts” theme by sharing some business cards we designed recently for Santé Cardiovasculaire des Laurentides. Using warm, inviting shades of reds and purples, we kept the design clean and minimal. The logo (designed by yours truly as well!) adds to the inviting flare of the cards.

As our work schedule settles back to its normal pace after the holidays, we can’t help but think back to all the fun we had creating custom holiday materials for our clients over the past few months. Using different styles, mediums, sizes and finishes, we were able to personalize our clients’ marketing materials to achieve delicious, lasting impressions for their businesses.

Here are a couple of examples of our recent holiday work:

These fun inspirational posters and printed envelopes were created for Real Estate Agent Mark-André Martel from Sutton Group. The card starts with a simple illustration, followed by a personal message from the Martel Team and helpful real-estate advice for the new year. As the card opens, a beautiful typographic poster unfolds with an message that sparkles joy and inspiration during the season. We also designed a French version. Mais oui!

Niskamoon Corporation was looking to give their clients and staff a more traditional card with their own flare. By taking advantage of a beautiful Northern landscape photograph, we created this tri-lingual corporate card that screams “Happy Holidays!”

Autonomy Capital, a New York based investment company, wanted to get away from generic online card-making to create something more personalized. We were able to translate their idea into a classy holiday card with beautiful pattern and lettering.

Sometimes paper isn’t the answer- especially if you’re promoting your company’s sustainable initiatives for 2016. Lovepac connected with their clients over the holidays and used the occasion to announce a new offering. Our team created the perfect image to honour their new environmentally friendly program.

Holiday cards keep your company fresh in your customers minds during the coming new year. They help you keep your business relations on a personal level by giving you the opportunity to send a friendly “hey” and “thank you” to your customers without asking for anything in return.

Holidays are all about sharing, connecting, and giving. We are super stoked to finally be able to share our holiday greeting card for 2015. The idea for the design was sparked by the notion that “By giving we become open to receiving more than we have”. For the front of the card, we made sure the viewer’s eyes would be drawn first to the inclusive message “Merry Everything”. (It is after-all a holiday card!) Surrounding the holiday message are bilingual inspirational quotes, holiday themed messages and intricate geometric line-art. The white line art pops on the dark gray background and of course there are accents of our hot pink brand colour scattered throughout the illustrations as well. At first glace the offset printed card seems flat, but the brightly coloured twine at the bottom hints that there’s more to this piece than meets the eye. The printed cards have been perforated with a custom die that makes it possible to pop out 5 of the messages to use as gift tags. The die cuts at the bottom of the cards keep the pink thread neatly stored ready to attach the tags provided to those holiday gifts. For the back, we added a variation of the pattern in a delicate gray on white so as not to distract from a personalized, hand-written message written on each card. White envelopes just wouldn’t do justice for these cards, so we free-style lettered the recipient’s names and addresses on silver mirror paper and inserted them with the cards into transparent A9 envelopes. One of our favourite features of the project is the hot pink round return address stickers placed on the front of the envelopes. These fun and interactive cards were designed to stand out in a sea of holiday mail. We hope they’ve helped our customers Share the Joy this holiday season!

Having fun with some stop motion to promote our custom holiday card services (both printed and digital).

Our latest portfolio piece came about when Niskamoon Corporation looked to our team to design their 10th anniversary Annual Report for 2014-2015. We designed the piece to reflect the essence of Niskamoon Corporation and its values; featuring local photographers’ work of Cree traditions and native landscapes.

The 8″x10″ report showcases a year of success for the corporation, all the while honouring a decade of dedication to preserving Cree traditions while encouraging educational and cultural growth. We also designed a 4″x7″ trifold report overview brochure to match and offset printed 850 copies of the report in less than a month.
