CREATIVE PUMPKIN CARVING BY RAY VILLAFANE image

On Friday I blogged about the amazing sand sculptures of Ray Villafane. Villafane sculpts with multiple mediums and one he is best known for is pumpkin carving. From 1993 to 2006 Ray taught art to elementary school students in Michigan. It was during this time that Ray began pumpkin sculpting, initially as projects with his students. After several custom-carved pumpkin requests from students’ parents, Ray started offering them to local hotels and restaurants. In 2007 Ray was contacted by High Noon Entertainment to participate in the Food Network’s Challenge Show, Outrageous Pumpkins. Ray competed as one of four professional pumpkin sculptors and won all three rounds. Outrageous Pumpkins logged the highest ratings of any other Challenge episode. He was invited ...

THE SANDS TAKE TIME: SAND ART BY RAY VILLAFANE image

After competing in the Food Network’s Pumpkin Challenge Shows, New York born artist Ray Villafane was invited by a professional sand sculpting company to participate in their annual sculpting project in Italy. In November 2008, Ray accepted the invitation and created his first sand sculptures. The following summer he returned and created “Dante’s Inferno” on the beach.
